Return of the Iconic Victoria’s Secret Angels: The 2024 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Have you seen those Victoria’s Secret Angels edits–like Adriana Lima’s iconic runway moments– paired with Brazilian phonk on TikTok?  It’s been six years since the last Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2018; the show was put on an indefinite pause, prompted by the industry’s shifting focus on inclusivity and diversity, and a critique of the show;s lack of representation and body positivity. But now, after years of anticipation and online speculation, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has finally returned, rekindling the allure that once captivated global audiences.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is celebrated for its stunning performances, themed lingerie, extravagant wings, and world-renowned models who strut the stage with confidence and elegance. The event has always been more than just a display of their latest lingerie collections. For those who grew up idolizing Victoria’s Secret Angels, the fashion show has long symbolized a celebration of femininity, strength, and empowerment. Since its founding in 1995, it has undeniably inspired generations of women and became  the trademark of Victoria’s Secret’s brand image. In honor of the show’s comeback, let’s do a recap of this year’s show–everything from the performances to the lineup of new and previous Victoria’s Secret supermodels, and the mixed reactions circulating online surrounding this year’s show. Did this year’s show manage to live up to the magic of the early 2000s?

The 2024 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show took place at the Duggal Greenhouse in Brooklyn, New York, on October 15th, live streaming across several platforms. This year’s show was marked by a star-studded lineup of models, both familiar faces and newcomers. Longtime fans were delighted by the return of original Angels like Tyra Banks, Adriana Lima, and Candice Swanepoel.. Alongside them, new-generation models such as Gigi Hadid, Irina Shayk, Ashley Graham, Liu Wen, Bella Hadid, and Alex Consani brought fresh energy and diversity to the runway, showcasing a range of styles that celebrate individuality and inclusivity in modeling. Several well-established designers contributed to the creation of the wings and lingerie sets, including Zaldy, the  Emmy Award-winning costume designer known for his work on RuPaul's Drag Race, Lady Gaga's Monster Ball Tour, and Britney Spears's Femme Fatale Tour. Rising female singers such as Tyla, Cher, and BLACKPINK’s Lisa also took the stage, performing their latest hit singles to a large crowd.

Despite the general excitement surrounding the show, reactions to the outfits, wings, and overall production were mixed. While many praised the creativity and boldness of the designs, others felt certain looks missed the mark. Many were disappointed that the show’s formatting and designs worn by the Angels were not as reminiscent of the mysterious, “bombshell” vibe maintained in the early 2000s.

Many criticized the quality of the wings and hairstyles as well, with some questioning the budget put into styling and noting how the current standards and designs of Victoria’s Secret do not live up to the nostalgia associated with the brand’s prime era. Compared to the beachy waves and voluminous hairstyles of the Angels in the 2000’s, this year’s show designers opted for more slick-back ponytails and straight hairstyles, along with the use of faux feathers and synthetic materials for the wings over animal feathers. Older shows featured more elaborate and extravagant designs, with dramatic elements like larger wings and intricate embellishments that felt unique and luxurious.

While many welcomed the move toward inclusivity and body positivity, others expressed nostalgia for the brand's traditional aesthetic. Some fans argued that they preferred the classic image that the Angels represented, feeling that it was part of an integral part of the brand's identity that should be maintained. Many users across TikTok and Instagram collectively comment that the classic lingerie styles and runway looks from earlier shows are often remembered for their boldness and sexiness, which some feel have been toned down in recent years.

In response, users came to the defense, arguing  that body positivity in modeling is necessary and encourages positivity in the industry, as it promotes a more inclusive beauty standard that resonates with a wider audience. Supporters emphasized that showcasing diverse body types not only reflects reality but also empowers individuals to embrace their own uniqueness, ultimately challenging outdated beauty standards and fostering a healthier self-image among viewers. A common idea was that we should be looking towards the future for beauty and fashion trends rather than dwelling on what was the trend in the past. Newer lingerie brands such as Savage x Fenty have achieved this, prompting users for Victoria’s Secret to follow suit.

Many speculated that most of the show’s budget might have gone towards bringing back major names  in modeling and some of the original Victoria’s Secret Angels. Nonetheless,  the general public has welcomed the show’s return with open arms, especially after seeing the show constantly being a trending topic despite its decline over half a decade ago. “People these days complain about everything and anything,” a user on TikTok commented. “Just be grateful that the show came back after so long.”

As the curtains fell, I was reminded once again of the cultural impact and legacy of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.  With the Angels taking to the runway once more, I look forward to seeing if Victoria's Secret can adapt to the changing landscape of beauty and empowerment while still captivating audiences and honoring its iconic image.
