Netflix Near NYU

There’s a really good new show on Netflix called Russian Doll. I know that Netflix was pushing it really hard for a while, which can be a big turn off when you’re trying to find a new show to watch. But it’s an excellent show. And... it was filmed right around Tompkins Square Park, which is blocks from NYU and an area where a ton of us NYU students live. As a resident of the area myself, I geeked out when I realized that all of the characters were bopping around my neighborhood.

Here are some stills from the show and some cool places you can visit around them:

Tompkins Square Park is a great place to hang out on a warm spring day. I’m looking forward to this happening very soon. One of my favorite activities around here is to go to Tompkins Square Bagels on 10th and Avenue A, on the northwest corner of the park, then take my bagel over for a picnic with friends.

This is the corner of 9th Street and Avenue A on the western border of Tompkins Square Park. My favorite restaurant, Thursday Kitchen, is steps off this intersection on 9th between Avenue A and 1st Avenue. Head over there at night for some creative pouch drinks (like adult Capri Sun!) and amazing Korean fusion food. They open at 6pm, and be sure to get there right away unless you want to wait for upwards of an hour and a half! Pro tip: if you live near the restaurant, show up at 6:45 to put your name down. This should give you about an hour to head home and get ready while you wait for a table. They’ll text you 15 minutes before your table is ready.

Here are some stills from the corner of 7th St. and Avenue B. This bar with the red door is fittingly named 7B! This is where the action in the series all kicks off, so be sure to look out for it. I’ve never been inside, but from what I hear it’s a good place to watch a Yankees game. If you’re a media nerd like myself, the building the bar is in has some amazing old advertisements still painted onto the brick above!

One of the main characters in the show, Alan, lives in this building on 7th Street between Avenues B and C (217 E 7th St.). The building isn’t much to look at, but it’s near Tompkins Square Park like the rest of these spots, so if you like the series and decide to take a look around it’s a must-visit! Be sure to be respectful to all residents of the building and the area!

Last but not least, my favorite deli in the world: Sunny & Annie on 6th St. and Avenue B. They have the best sandwiches in the world, and very friendly owners who are proud to have started the deli 22 years ago! It also doesn’t hurt that they’re open 24 hours.

Quick shoutout: Gruppo Pizza, which is the red awning you see in the last photo above the red afro on Nadia’s mom, is said by East Village dwellers to have awesome food. It is next door to Sunny & Annie on 6th St. and Avenue B.
